Much as I can’t believe it, there is only ONE MONTH before the release of Whispers from the Shadows, book 2 in the Culper Ring Series!
Man, the last six months have flown by!!
And you know what? I still have boxes and boxes of Ring of Secrets sitting here, just waiting to find happy homes. So…how better to get them into eager hands than with a massive giveaway??
Excellent question. Answer: there is no better way. 😉
So [insert trumpet blare here], allow me to introduce the great, the magnificent
30 Days of Giveaways!!
Each and every day for the month of July, I’ll be giving away 1 copy of Ring of Secrets (if you already own RoS, you can have another of my books. If you have them all, then someone else’s). PLUS, once a week (drawn on Friday), I’ll be giving away a bonus gift. First up:
A $15 gift card to Bath & Body Works
Now…confession. This giveaway has an ulterior motive *gasp*. No, not that I want to suck you into my series with book 1 and thereby cajole you into ordering book 2. Well, I man, obviously that, but it’s not what I mean. 😉 I’d also love to get y’all talking more on the blog. So. If you think I’m discontinuing my normal blogging…think again.
Did you know that Mondays are Word of the Week days around here? Seriously! And this is the sort of fun we have on Mondays.
Today–nickname. Ever wonder where that word came from? No, not from all the Nicholases that came to be called Nick. 😉 Nope. It’s from eke.
Wouldn’t have guessed, would you? But it is. Eke, which means “to lengthen or supplement” (usually laboriously), was added to “name” back centuries ago as an “additional” name. But over time, “eke-name” got shifted and mispronounced and became “nickname.”
Fun, eh?
So my question to you today is:
What’s the funniest/strangest/sweetest nickname you’ve ever been called?
My answer: Boat. Wanna figure out how I got that one?
Now–get entering! And don’t forget to come back tomorrow for Day 2, and more fun stuff. =)
My family loved to make up nicknames so I have a few though the strangest is probably Gatorade. When I was little my best friend Seth would call me Abigator and then one of my sisters started calling me Gate or Gator which then morphed into Gatorade.
Glad you liked it. I always smile when I remember that nickname of mine and the story that goes with it.
Loved hearing how you got your nickname of Boat on today's post. How fun!
My dad's nicknames for me are buglet and buggy.
Katie

Oh, that's a fun one! And it doesn't much matter which day you're on. =) Glad you stopped by!
I guess I might be a day behind here, but my favorite nick name is KitKat. Given to me by my beloved dad. He was not into nicknames, usually, but perhaps since my name (Kathy) and my sisters' name (Karen) were so alike, he often called me KitKat. This was way before the candy bar made that term famous.
I miss him and can't wait until I can hear him call me that again someday in Heaven.
That's awesome. =)
Yup! It works out just fine though, because I call him a Penguin – so we're even. It's funny though because my in-laws still don't quite understand why I love penguins so much, and often get my something penguin related for holidays. I love it! 😀 More stuff to remind me of him! 🙂
Babe- by my hubby :o)
My name is Wendy so the only 'nickname', if you could call it that was when my name was/is mispronounced as Windy.
wfnren(at)aol(dot)com
With a French pronunciation? That's cute.
Sistoiree – it's what my sister and I both call each other 🙂
We have a store around here by the name of Bon-Ton. 😉 What's it short for?
LOL. I shall remember that one, Puppy. 😉
=) Are you tall, Karen? I like to say I have long legs, but at 5'3"…LOL. They're long proportionately, anyway. 😉
I always love the "not sure why" ones. =) And when a grandfather has a special name for you. Reminds me of one I'd forgotten! My great-grandfather always called me Digit, because I was so excited about becoming "double-digits" when I turned 10.
Only nicknames I have ever had are Bon & Bon-Ton. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity!
PUPPY! My sister just started calling me 'puppy' one day in college. It stuck!
sticks….because I have VERY long slim legs :O)
Amos. That's what my Grandpa always called me… not totally sure why, but I guess it's similar to Amy. 🙂
LOL! Don't you love the ones that require some serious explanation? My hubby is so good at following rabbit trails of dialogue to random nicknames for me that no one else could ever get. And which they occasionally mistake for an insult. 😉
My Husband calls me Tuna. When we were dating, we would bicker back and forth and finally, he ended one conversation with "Oh yeah, well you're a TUNA!" and it stuck. 😀
How fun is THAT! LOL. That one made me grin. =)
Kathy darlin' does have a certain ring to it. =) And Sherlock! Love it!!
My nicknames…well, Annie used to be the one of choice. Roseanna-Danna, of course, Pooky (my sister gave me that one–her kids now call me "Aunt Pooky"). Banana. Hunny (spelled in the Pooh way, mind you) from my hubby.
Most recently, Ro. Not short for Roseanna, actually, but rather for Roseanna-Optimist. (I claimed it was my middle name. My critique partners insisted it was my first. Or, at least, that it was hyphenated, LOL.)
True, true, but I thought that might be a bit obvious as you already knew the story behind my name! 🙂 Laughs. I love the water to this day, although I do not get the chance to swim nearly as often as I used too! One day!! 🙂 Ooh, did you know!? I learnt something interesting since I last spoke to you about my name: Jorie IS officially a shortened version of my name! I never even knew that! I found it over on an etymology website! I was quite chuffed whilst there to have learnt that my name originated in France prior to 'jumping' over to England! 🙂 🙂 For a girl who adores history AND ancestral roots it was rather smashing!
Bubble Gum! 🙂 I use to wear pink all the time when I was younger (pink shirt, pink pants, and pink shoes)!
One of my friends calls me Kathy darlin' for some unknown reason and another calls me Sherlock Holmes.
What nicknames do you have?
Fish–definitely sounds apt! And don't forget "Jorie" itself! Quite a unique example of "eking" a name from Marjorie. =) Love them both!
Hallo Hallo Ms. White! 🙂
Spring came and went so quickly, that I never had the proper chance to get back with you about Ring of Secrets! I will be making amends soon! I had to sit here and think a moment about if I even had a special name and then, it dawned on me: Fish! I was a competitive swimmer and let's just say it was quite aptly given!!
Bless you for offering such a wicked sweet giveaway!!
Nice!
That's so cute!
We could come up with one. 😉
My little sister used to call me "Jilli-bear" 🙂
Don't have one
My family calls me Babydoll
That's hilarious! Love "Chirping Girl." There was a girl at my college who one of my classmates referred to as "The Girl Who Walks Like She Means It." And everyone knew EXACTLY who he meant, LOL.
Yeah, every time I see a picture of your smiling face, I think, "Now there's a grump!" LOL
Chirping Girl to people who had trouble remembering my name (I can whistle like a little bird or chick, so that one at least makes sense), but one of my uncles, for reasons known only to him – if of course there is a reason – calls me Rocky the Squirrel.
Yep, I'm a grump munster 😉
And let's pretend I know how to type "Ashley"…
I bet you got that through always growling and scowling, right? 😉 That's a great one.
Love those! Nice theme, too. 😉
My youngest niece calls her older sister that. =)
Love Beatrix Potter! That's awesome, Ashely. =)
'Giggles' was the nickname that two brothers called me when I was growing up. Our families used to go camping together every summer 🙂
I have been called two cute names – Daisy Chain and Petal. lol 🙂
Sissy by my little brother. angelachesnut246[at]gmail.com
Little Miss Tittlemouse. Anyone remember Beatrix Potter? I was always so "busy" when I was little, so my daddy started calling me that. 🙂
Okay, that's pretty funny. =)
And nope, mine has nothing to do with actual boats. Give ya a hint–it started with a rhyme.
Fun!
One that fits all three parts of your question: "Yo, Adrienne!"
My first tutoring student couldn't remember my name at first but knew it began with an A. His favorite movies were the Rocky movies, hence the "Yo, Adrienne!"
It's so hard to believe that student graduated two years ago now!
Roseanna, did you get your nickname because you love riding on boats? Or swam a lot as a kid?
Blessings,
Andrea
Wow. I have a couple. Tweety, T-squared, double T and the list goes on.
Tell the World
LOL. Yeah, I never would have earned any nickname like THAT! 😉
AE – short for Canon AE 1. Referring to my amazing volleyball serving skills!
I love it!
How lovely!
Aw. =) I call my little girl that from time to time. =)
LOL. That's cute. =)
I was called Pumpkin at High School. I came back from holidays with a kind of short bob & with my hair color, well, I looked like a pumpkin head. The nickname soon got shorted to Punky. I actually loved it. It was kind of a fun nickname & was never meant to be mean.
Catalina as a sweet name from our small group leader's wife ~ an endearment
Porkchop (my dad was a meat-cutter and I loved porkchops).
Baby doll 🙂
