Did you know that Mondays are Word of the Week days around here? Seriously! And this is the sort of fun we have on Mondays.
Today–nickname. Ever wonder where that word came from? No, not from all the Nicholases that came to be called Nick. 😉 Nope. It’s from eke.
Wouldn’t have guessed, would you? But it is. Eke, which means “to lengthen or supplement” (usually laboriously), was added to “name” back centuries ago as an “additional” name. But over time, “eke-name” got shifted and mispronounced and became “nickname.”
Fun, eh?

What’s the funniest/strangest/sweetest nickname you’ve ever been called?
My answer: Boat. Wanna figure out how I got that one?

My family loved to make up nicknames so I have a few though the strangest is probably Gatorade. When I was little my best friend Seth would call me Abigator and then one of my sisters started calling me Gate or Gator which then morphed into Gatorade.

I guess I might be a day behind here, but my favorite nick name is KitKat. Given to me by my beloved dad. He was not into nicknames, usually, but perhaps since my name (Kathy) and my sisters' name (Karen) were so alike, he often called me KitKat. This was way before the candy bar made that term famous.
I miss him and can't wait until I can hear him call me that again someday in Heaven.

Yup! It works out just fine though, because I call him a Penguin – so we're even. It's funny though because my in-laws still don't quite understand why I love penguins so much, and often get my something penguin related for holidays. I love it! 😀 More stuff to remind me of him! 🙂

I always love the "not sure why" ones. =) And when a grandfather has a special name for you. Reminds me of one I'd forgotten! My great-grandfather always called me Digit, because I was so excited about becoming "double-digits" when I turned 10.

LOL! Don't you love the ones that require some serious explanation? My hubby is so good at following rabbit trails of dialogue to random nicknames for me that no one else could ever get. And which they occasionally mistake for an insult. 😉
My Husband calls me Tuna. When we were dating, we would bicker back and forth and finally, he ended one conversation with "Oh yeah, well you're a TUNA!" and it stuck. 😀

My nicknames…well, Annie used to be the one of choice. Roseanna-Danna, of course, Pooky (my sister gave me that one–her kids now call me "Aunt Pooky"). Banana. Hunny (spelled in the Pooh way, mind you) from my hubby.
Most recently, Ro. Not short for Roseanna, actually, but rather for Roseanna-Optimist. (I claimed it was my middle name. My critique partners insisted it was my first. Or, at least, that it was hyphenated, LOL.)
True, true, but I thought that might be a bit obvious as you already knew the story behind my name! 🙂 Laughs. I love the water to this day, although I do not get the chance to swim nearly as often as I used too! One day!! 🙂 Ooh, did you know!? I learnt something interesting since I last spoke to you about my name: Jorie IS officially a shortened version of my name! I never even knew that! I found it over on an etymology website! I was quite chuffed whilst there to have learnt that my name originated in France prior to 'jumping' over to England! 🙂 🙂 For a girl who adores history AND ancestral roots it was rather smashing!

Spring came and went so quickly, that I never had the proper chance to get back with you about Ring of Secrets! I will be making amends soon! I had to sit here and think a moment about if I even had a special name and then, it dawned on me: Fish! I was a competitive swimmer and let's just say it was quite aptly given!!
